Ask Your Elder

In the spirit of a magic eight ball, a Chinese chandelier was transformed into an oracle that dispenses life advice to gallery visitors in the form of randomly generated responses.  The personality and voice projected by the lantern is that of a Chinese elder who's lived through it all. He provides advice whether you want it or not.

When a visitor approaches the chandelier, the lantern pulses its lights and provide a one-sentence answer. Answers might include “Just shut up and give me an A,” “Family is most important,” and other well-intentioned statements that are reminiscent of the advice given in Chinese-American families. The pre-recorded lantern voice was programmed to be triggered the presence of visitors.
